June 17, 2010 Fishing Report
June 17, 2010
Recent rains have added some much-needed water to the Beaverkill; flows are excellent and will bring us comfortably through the end of June. Cooler evenings have also helped keep water temperatures favorable for the trout.
Morning and evening fishing continues to be productive – from early morning till noon and then later in the afternoon up until dark. There has been a wide variety of small hatches of flies – reports of a few Gray Foxes have come in, in addition to Blue Winged Olives, small light-colored Caddis flies and Sulphurs. There are still a few yellow Stone flies about.
Anglers have had success using small Adams, Elk Hair Caddises and Blue-Winged Olives. Light Cahills and Sulphurs are also favorite flies to use this time of year, especially in the evenings.
When fish are rising but not taking your fly, try a smaller fly. You can often have success with the same fly by going down in size. Remember that when fishing with flies of size #16 or #18 you’ll need to use 6X tippet. For midges (size #20 – 22) you’ll need to tippet down to size 7X. When using smaller flies, make each cast count and try not to disturb the water near your fly and around any rising fish.
